Characteristics: Noncorrosive metal. Does not react with moist air to form hydroxide. Reacts slowly with water and halogen gases, soluble in dilute acids. High cross-section for thermal neutrons. Low toxicity.

Derivation: Reduction of the fluoride with calcium.
