V. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION Effects of Exposure: To the best of our knowledge the acute and chronic toxicity of this substance is not fully known. Oxidation of osmium compounds may form the volatile and highly irritating osmium (VIII) oxide. Exposure may cause bronchitis and dermatitis. Osmium compounds are generally considered to be poisonous. Ocular disturbances are associated with exposure to OSO4. The oxide ion generally has a very low toxicity. Acute Effects: Inhalation: Irritating to mucous membranes. Ingestion: May cause heavy metal poisoning. Skin: Irritating effect on skin. Danger through skin absorption. Eye: Strong irritating effect.
EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES: INHALATION: Supply fresh air. If required, provide artificial respiration. Keep patient warm. Seek immediate medical advice.
