V. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION Effects of Exposure: To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of lithium hydroxide monohydrate have not been thoroughly investigated and recorded. Large doses of lithium have caused dizziness and prostration, and can cause kidney damage if sodium intake is limited. Dehydration, weight loss, dermatological effects, and thyroid disturbances have been reported. Central nervous system effects that include slurred speach, blurred vision, sensory loss, ataxia and convulsions may occur. Diarrhea, vomiting and neuromuscular effects such as tremor, clonus and hyperactive reflexes may occur as a result of repeated exposure to lithium ion. Material is extremely destructive to tissue of the mucous membranes and upper respiratory tract, eyes and skin. Acute Effects: Inhalation: Causes severe irritation and burns. May cause irritation to the mucous membranes and upper respiratory tract. Ingestion: Causes severe irritation and burns. May cause central nervous system effects, circulatory failure and cardiovascular effects. Skin: Causes severe irritation and burns. Eye: Causes severe irritation and burns. Chronic Effects: Inhalation: May cause pulmonary edema and lung damage. Ingestion: May cause gastrointestinal irritation, renal dysfunction, derangement of neuromuscular activity, diabetes and kidney damage. Skin: May be harmful if absorbed through the skin. Eye: May cause blurred vision and blindness. Target Organs: May affect the resiratory system, skin and eyes. Medical Conditions Possibly Aggravated by Exposure: Pre-existing respiratory and skin disorders. Carcinogenicity: NTP: No IARC: No OSHA: No
EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES: INHALATION: Remove victim to fresh air, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult and seek medical attention immediately. INGESTION: Do NOT induce vomiting. Wash out mouth with water provided individual is conscious. Seek medical attention immediately. Never induce vomiting or give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. SKIN: Remove contaminated clothing and shoes, wash with soap and plenty of water. Seek medical attention. EYES: Immediately flush with copious amounts of water for at least 15 minutes, lifting upper and lower lids, seek medical attention immediately.
VI. REACTIVITY DATA Stability: Stable under recommended storage conditions. Conditions to Avoid: Air, water/moisture. Incompatibility (Material to Avoid): Strong oxidizing agents, strong acids, aluminum and aluminum alloys, zinc, carbon dioxide, air, water/moisture. Hazardous Decomposition Products: Lithium oxide fume.
VII. SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES Steps to Be Taken in Case Material Is Released or Spilled: Wear appropriate respiratory and protective equipment specified in section VIII. Isolate spill area and provide ventilation. Use a neutralizing agent. Scoop up or vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA) air filter and place in a closed container for proper disposal. Take care not to raise dust. Waste Disposal Method: Dispose of in accordance with all Federal, State and Local environmental regulations.
VIII. SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION Respiratory Protection: NIOSH approved dust-mist-vapor cartridge respirator Ventilation: Handle in a controlled, enclosed environment in an inert gas such as argon. Use local exhaust to maintain low levels of exposure. General exhaust is not recommended. Eye Protection: Safety goggles. Protective Gloves: Impervious gloves. Other Protective Clothing or Equipment: Protective gear suitable to prevent contamination.
IX. SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage: Store in a cool, dry area. Store in a tightly sealed container. Wash thoroughly after handling. Do not breathe dust. Do not get in eyes, on skin, on clothing. Avoid prolonged or repeated exposure. Other Precautions: Hygroscopic. Store under dry, inert gas. Protect from air, humidity and water. May react with water. Precautionary Statements: Harmful solid, Corrosive, causes burns. Harmful by inhalation, in contact with skin and if swallowed. Work Practices: Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure at low levels. Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices. Do not use tobacco or food in work area. Wash thoroughly before eating and smoking. Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air. Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and facilities for washing.
