Special Fire Fighting Procedures: Wear a self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing to prevent contact with skin and eyes. Fumes from fire are hazardous. Isolate runoff to prevent environmental pollution. Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards: When heated to decomposition, may emit toxic fumes of chloride.
V. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION Effects of Exposure: To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of iridium chloride have not been thoroughly investigated and reported. Exposure to iridium compounds may cause irritation to the eyes or respiratory tract. Toxicity of iridium is not known. It is predicted to have toxicity similar to osmium and platinum, two members of the same group. The chloride ion generally has a very low toxicity. Acute Effects: Inhalation: Irritant. Ingestion: No data Skin: Irritant Eye: Irritant Chronic Effects: No data Sensitization: No sensitizing effects known. Carcinogenicity: EPA: No IARC: No NTP: No OSHA: No ACGIH: No
EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES: INHALATION: Remove to fresh air, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult and seek medical attention. INGESTION: Do not induce vomiting, seek immediate medical attention. Never induce vomiting or give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. SKIN: Remove contaminated clothing, brush material off skin, wash affected area with mild soap and water, seek medical attention. EYE: Flush eyes with lukewarm water, lifting upper and lower eyelids, for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention.
VI. REACTIVITY DATA Stability: Stable Conditions to Avoid: Water/moisture Incompatible Materials: Water/moisture, acids. Hazardous Decomposition Products: Hydrogen chloride Hazardous Polymerization: Will not occur
VII. SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES Steps to Be Taken in Case Material Is Released or Spilled: Wear appropriate respiratory and protective equipment specified in section VIII. Sweep up and place in airtight plastic container. Ship to precious metal refiner. Waste Disposal Method: Dispose of in accordance with all State, Federal and Local regulations.
VIII. SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION Respiratory Protection: In dusting conditions, use a NIOSH approved respirator. Ventilation: Handle in a dry, controlled atmosphere. Handle in an inert gas such as argon. Use local exhaust as needed to maintain airborne exposure below control limits. General exhaust is not recommended. Protective Gloves: Rubber gloves Eye Protection: Safety glasses Other Protective Clothing or Equipment: Protective gear suitable to prevent contamination.
IX. SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage: Store in a cool, dry place in tightly closed containers. Air and moisture sensitive. STORE UNDER ARGON OR OTHER INERT ENVIRONMENT. Avoid breathing dusts. Avoid direct or prolonged contact with skin and eyes. Do not rub eyes with soiled hands. Work Practices: Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure. Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices. Do not use tobacco or food in work area. Wash thoroughly before eating or smoking. Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air. Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and facilities for washing. TSCA Listed: Yes DOT Regulations: Hazard Class: None
