Special Firefighting Procedures:  Firefighters must wear full face, self-contained breathing apparatus with full protective clothing to prevent contact with skin and eyes.  Fumes from fire are hazardous.  Isolate runoff to prevent environmental pollution.

Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazard:  Indium oxide may emit toxic fumes if involved in a fire.

V.   HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

Indium is a poison by subcutaneous route.  It affects the liver, heart, kidneys and the blood.  Teratogenic effects.  Inhalation of indium compounds may cause damage to the respiratory system, hydrated indium oxide is a poison by intravenous route.  (Sax, Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials, eighth edition.)

Acute Effects:

Inhalation:  May cause irritation to the mucous membranes and damage to the respiratory system.

Ingestion:  May cause irritation to the gastrointestinal tract. 

Skin:  May cause irritation.

Eye:  May cause irritation.

Chronic Effects:

Inhalation:  May cause pneumonitis. 

Ingestion:  May affect the heart, liver, kidneys and blood.

Skin:  No chronic health effects recorded.

Eye:  No chronic health effects recorded.

Target Organs:  May affect the heart, lungs, kidneys, and blood.

Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure:  Pre-existing respiratory disorders.

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION:  Remove from exposure, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult and seek medical attention.

INGESTION:  Give 1-2 glasses of milk or water and induce vomiting.  Seek immediate medical attention

SKIN:  Remove any contaminated clothing, brush material off of skin, flush with running water, wash carefully with soap and water.  Seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

EYE:  Flush with copious amounts of water for at least 15 minutes.  Seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

VII.   SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES

Steps to Be Taken in Case Material Is Released or Spilled:  Wear appropriate respiratory and protective equipment.  Isolate spill area and provide ventilation.  Vacuum up spill using high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA) air filter and place in a closed container for proper disposal.  Take care not to raise dust.

Waste Disposal Method:  In accordance with Local, State and Federal Waste Disposal Regulations.

VIII.   SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection (Specify Type):  NIOSH approved dust respirator.

Ventilation:  Use local exhaust to maintain concentration at or below the TLV.  General exhaust is recommended.

Protective Gloves:  Rubber gloves

Eye Protection:  Safety Glasses

Other Protective Equipment:  Normal Lab Wear to prevent contamination of skin and clothing.

IX.   SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage:   Store in cool, dry area.  Keep container closed.  Store in tightly sealed containers.  Wash thoroughly after handling.

Work Practices:  Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure.  Use good housekeeping a sanitation practices.  Do not use tobacco or food in work area.  Wash thoroughly before eating or smoking.  Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air.  Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and facilities for washing.
