V. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION Effects of Exposure: Indium is a poison by subcutaneous route. It affects the liver, heart, kidneys and the blood. Teratogenic effects. Inhalation of indium compounds may cause damage to the respiratory system, hydrated indium oxide is a poison by intravenous route. (Sax, Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials, eighth edition.) Acute Effects: Inhalation: May cause irritation to the mucous membranes and damage to the respiratory system. Ingestion: May cause irritation to the gastrointestinal tract. Skin: May cause irritation. Eye: May cause irritation. Chronic Effects: Inhalation: May cause pneumonitis. Ingestion: May affect the heart, liver, kidneys and blood. Skin: No chronic health effects recorded. Eye: No chronic health effects recorded. Target Organs: May affect the heart, lungs, kidneys, and blood. EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES: INHALATION: Remove from exposure, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult and seek medical attention. INGESTION: Give 1-2 glasses of milk or water and induce vomiting. Seek immediate medical attention SKIN: Remove any contaminated clothing, brush material off of skin, flush with running water, wash carefully with soap and water. Seek medical attention if symptoms persist. EYE: Flush with copious amounts of water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

Work Practices: Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure. Use good housekeeping a sanitation practices. Do not use tobacco or food in work area. Wash thoroughly before eating or smoking. Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air. Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and facilities for washing.
