Product Name: Chromium Nitride Formula: CrN or Cr2N CAS Number: 12053-27-9 (Cr2N) 24094-93-7 (CrN)
II. HAZARDOUS INGREDIENTS Hazardous Components: Chromium Nitride Percent (%): 0-100 OSHA/PEL: 0.5 mg(Cr)/m3 ACGIH/TLV: 0.5 mg(Cr)/m3 HMIS Rating: Health: 1 Flammability: 0 Reactivity: 0
III. PHYSICAL DATA Boiling Point: N/E or N/A Melting Point: N/E or N/A Specific Gravity: 5.9 g/cc (CrN) Solubility in H2O: Insoluble Appearance and Odor: Dark powder, no odor.
IV. FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS Flash Point: N/A Autoignition Temperature: N/A Explosive Limits: Lower: N/A Upper: N/A Extinguishing Media: If involved in fire, DO NOT USE WATER. Use dry powder extinguishing agents, dry sand, or dry ground dolomite. Special Firefighting Procedures: Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and protective clothing to prevent contact with skin and eyes. If without risk, remove material from fire area. Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazard: Emits toxic fumes under fire conditions. Hydrogen gas may be released on contact with mineral acids. Fine powders may be dust explosion hazard.
V. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION Effects of Exposure: To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of chromium nitride have not been thoroughly investigated and recorded. Chromium powder, chromium (II) and chromium (III) compounds may cause nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, skin and eye irritation and pneumoconiosis. Although less likely than Cr (VI) compounds, the NTP considers all chromium to be potentially carcinogenic. Acute Effects: Inhalation: May cause irritation. May cause pneumoconiosis. Ingestion: May be harmful, effects not known. May affect gastrointestinal and urinary systems. Skin: May cause irritation. May cause allergic skin reactions. Eye: May cause irritation. Chronic Effects: Ingestion: Stomach pains, vomiting, diarrhea, liver damage and kidney damage have been reported from prolonged exposure to chromium. Skin: Repeated contact may cause eczematous dermatitis. Other: Insoluble chromium compounds exhibit very low oral toxicity. No specific signs of chromium toxicity have been reported. Routes of Entry: Inhalation, ingestion and skin. Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure: None specified. Carcinogenicity: NTP: No IARC: No OSHA: No
EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES: INHALATION: Remove to fresh air, if not breathing give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. INGESTION: SKIN: Remove contaminated clothing, flood skin with large amounts of water. If irritation persists, seek medical attention. EYE: Flush eyes with large amounts of water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation persists, contact a physician.
VI. REACTIVITY DATA Stability: Stable Conditions to Avoid: Heat, moisture, incompatibles. Incompatibility (Materials to Avoid): Strong acids, oxidizing agents. Hazardous Decomposition Products: Oxides of nitrogen and chromium. Hydrogen gas may be released on contact with mineral acids. Hazardous Polymerization: Will not occur.
VII. SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES Steps to Be Taken in Case Material Is Released or Spilled: Wear full protective equipment specified in section VIII. Isolate spill area and provide ventilation. Cover spill with dry sand or vermiculite, mix well and sweep or scoop up and place in container for disposal. Avoid raising dust. Ventilate area and wash spill site after material pickup is complete. Waste Disposal Method: Dispose of in accordance with all Federal, State and Local regulations.
VIII. SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION Respiratory Protection: NIOSH approved high efficiency particle respirator. Ventilation: Laboratory fume hood. Protective Gloves: Rubber gloves Eye Protection: Chemical safety goggles Other Protective Equipment: Protective gear suitable to prevent contamination.
IX. SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage: Keep container tightly closed. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area. Avoid prolonged or repeated exposure. Avoid contact with acid. Wash throughly after handling. Work Practices: Maintain good housekeeping procedures and implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure at low levels. Do not use tobacco or food in work area. Wash thoroughly after handling and before eating or smoking and at the end of the work shift. Do not shake clothing or other items to remove dust. Use a vacuum. Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air. Avoid dust inhalation and direct skin contact. Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and facilities for washing. TSCA Listed: Yes DOT Regulations: Hazard Class: None
