V.   HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of cesium perchlorate have not been thoroughly investigated and reported.

Cesium compounds may cause hyper-irritability, including spasms, dizziness, abdominal cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions and collapse. Chronic ingestion of cesium has been fatal to laboratory animals, possibly due to the replacement of potassium. Chronic exposure also can have blood and neuromuscular effects.  Cesium may cause liver disorder, neuroendocrine disturbance and neuromuscular toxicity leading to irritability and convulsions.  Cesium compounds are also known mutagens.

Perchlorates are irritating to the skin and mucous membranes.

Acute Effects:

Inhalation:  May cause severe irritation to the upper respiratory system.

Ingestion: Moderately toxic by ingestion.

Skin: May cause severe irritation.

Eye: May cause severe irritation.

Chronic Effects:

Inhalation: No chronic health effects recorded.

Ingestion: May cause cesium poisoning.

Skin: May cause dermatitis.

Eye: No chronic health effects recorded.

Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure:  Pre-existing respiratory disorders

CarcinogenicityNTP:  No       IARC:  No       OSHA:  No

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION:  Remove victim to fresh air, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult and seek medical attention.

INGESTION: Give 1-2 glasses of milk or water and induce vomiting, seek medical attention.  Never induce vomiting or give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.

SKIN:  Remove contaminated clothing, brush material off skin, wash affected area with mild soap and water.  Seek medical attention.

EYES:  Flush with lukewarm water, lifting upper and lower eyelids, for at least 15 minutes.  Seek medical attention.

VI.   REACTIVITY DATA

Stability:  Stable

Conditions to Avoid:  Heat, shock

Incompatibility (Material to avoid):  Organic materials, sulfur, magnesium, aluminum/aluminum alloys, carbonaceous materials, Benzene, CaH2, charcoal, finely divided metals, reducing materials, easily oxidized materials.

Hazardous Decomposition Products:  Hydrogen chloride, metal oxide fume

Hazardous Polymerization:  Will not occur

VII.   SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES

Steps to Be Taken in Case Material Is Released or Spilled:  Wear a self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing.  Isolate the area where the spill occurred and insure proper ventilation is available.  Vacuum up spill using a high efficiency unit and place in a container for proper disposal.  Take care not to raise dust.

Waste Disposal Method:  Disposal must be made in accordance with Federal, State and Local regulations.

IX.   SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection:  Wear NIOSH- approved dust-mist-fume cartridge respirator.

Ventilation: Handle in a controlled, enclosed environment in an inert gas such as argon.  Use local exhaust to maintain low levels of exposure.  General exhaust is recommended.

Eye Protection:  Safety glasses.

Protective Gloves:  Neoprene

Other Protective Clothing or Equipment:  Wear protective clothing to prevent contamination of clothes and skin.

IX.   SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken Handling and Storage:  Store in a cool, dry place in tightly closed containers.  Wash hands and face thoroughly after handling and before eating.

Other Precautions: Handle and store under inert gas in a controlled environment.

Work Practices:  Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure at low levels.  Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices.  Do not use tobacco or food in work area.  Wash thoroughly before eating and smoking.  Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air.  Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and facilities for washing.
