III. PHYSICAL DATA Boiling Point: 1251 oC Melting Point: 682 oC Specific Gravity: 4.115 g/cc Solubility in H2O: Soluble Appearance and Odor: White crystalline powder, no odor.
IV. FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS DATA Flash Point: N/A Autoignition Temperature: N/A Flammable Limits: Upper: N/A Lower: N/A Extinguishing Media: Use suitable extinguishing media for surrounding material and type of fire. Special Firefighting Procedures: Firefighters must wear full face, self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing to prevent contact with skin and eyes. Fumes from fire are hazardous. Isolate runoff to prevent environmental pollution. Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazard: When heated to decomposition cesium fluoride may emit toxic fumes of fluorine. Contact with moisture may evolve toxic fumes of cesium hydroxide and hydrogen fluoride.
V. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION Effects of Exposure: To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of cesium fluoride have not been thoroughly investigated and reported. Cesium compounds may cause hyper-irritability, including spasms, dizziness, abdominal cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions and collapse. Chronic ingestion of cesium has been fatal to laboratory animals, possibly due to the replacement of potassium. Chronic exposure also can have blood and neuromuscular effects. Fluorides may cause salivation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain, followed by weakness, tremors, shallow respiration, convulsions and coma. May cause brain and kidney damage. Chronic fluoride poisoning can cause severe bone changes, loss of weight, anorexia, anemia and dental defects. Acute Effects: Inhalation: Danger - Poison. May cause irritation to the respiratory tract and mucous membranes. May cause asthma attacks, excessive salivation, thirst, sweating, vomiting, colic, diarrhea and lung granulomas. Ingestion: Danger - Poison. May cause gastrointestinal irritation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and cramp-like pains. Skin: May cause irritation, rashes and skin granulomas. Eye: May cause irritation. Chronic Effects: Inhalation: May cause fluorosis, pulmonary fibrosis, and severe bone changes. Ingestion: May affect the circulatory, enzyme and nervous system. Skin: May cause dermatitis. Eye: No chronic health effects recorded. Target Organs: Kidneys, lungs, bones. Carcinogenicity: NTP: No IARC: No OSHA: No
EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES: INHALATION: Remove victim to fresh air, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult and seek medical attention. INGESTION: Do not induce vomiting. Seek immediate medical attention. SKIN: Remove contaminated clothing, brush material off skin, wash affected area with mild soap and water. Seek medical attention. EYES: Flush with lukewarm water, lifting upper and lower eyelids, for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention immediately.
VI. REACTIVITY DATA Stability: Stable Conditions to Avoid: Water/moisture Incompatibility (Material to avoid): Water/moisture, benzenediazonium, tetrafluoroborate, difluoroamine, acids. Hazardous Decomposition Products: Fumes of fluorine, hydrofluoric acid, CsOH.
VII. SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES Steps to Be Taken in Case Material Is Released or Spilled: Wear appropriate respiratory and protective equipment specified in section VIII. Isolate spill area and provide ventilation. Scoop up or Vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA) air filter and place in a closed container for proper disposal. Take care not to raise dust. Waste Disposal Method: Disposal must be made in accordance with Federal, State and Local regulations.
IX. SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION Respiratory Protection: NIOSH approved dust, mist, vapor respirator. Ventilation: Handle in a controlled, enclosed environment in an inert gas such as argon. Use local exhaust to maintain low levels of exposure. General exhaust is not recommended. Eye Protection: Safety glasses Protective Gloves: Impervious gloves Other Protective Clothing or Equipment: Protective work clothing.
IX. SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS Precautions to Be Taken Handling and Storage: Wash thoroughly after handling. Do not get in eyes, on skin or clothing. Do not breathe dust, vapor, mist, or gas. Contact with acid may release toxic vapors of HF which causes burns. Other Precautions: Handle and store under inert gas in a controlled environment. Store in tightly sealed containers. Work Practices: Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure at low levels. Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices. Do not use tobacco or food in work area. Wash thoroughly before eating and smoking. Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air. Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and facilities for washing. TSCA Listed: Yes DOT Regulations: Hazard Class: 6.1 Identification Number: UN3288 Packing Group: III Proper Shipping Name: Toxic solid, inorganic, n.o.s. (Cesium Fluoride)
