Extinguishing Media:  Use suitable extinguishing media for surrounding materials and type of fire.

Special Fire Fighting Procedures:  Firefighters must wear full face, self-contained breathing apparatus with full protective clothing to prevent contact with skin and eyes.  Fumes from fire are hazardous.  Isolate runoff to prevent environmental pollution.

Unusual Fire & Explosion Hazard:  When heated to decomposition, barium fluoride may emit toxic fumes of fluorine and barium.

V.  HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of barium fluoride have not been thoroughly investigated and recorded.

Barium compounds may cause severe gastroenteritis, including abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea, tremors, faintness, paralysis of the arms and legs, and slow or irregular heartbeat.  Severe cases may produce collapse and death due to respiratory failure.  Soluble barium compounds are more likely to cause these effects than insoluble compounds.  Inhalation of fumes may cause sore throat, coughing, labored breathing, and irritation of the respiratory tract as  well as the above symptoms.

Fluorides may cause salivation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain, followed by weakness, tremors, shallow respiration, convulsions and coma.  May cause brain and kidney damage.  Chronic fluoride poisoning can cause severe bone changes, loss of weight, anorexia, anemia and dental defects.

Acute Effects:

Inhalation:  May cause irritation to the respiratory tract and mucous membranes.  Dusts may cause asthma attacks and lung damage such as lung granulomas and pulmonary edema.  Large doses may cause immediate defecation, writhing, loss of muscle coordination, labored respiration, sedation, hypotension, dyspnea, hyperemia, liver edema and necrosis, portal congestion, pleural effusion and granulamatous peritonitis with serous and hemorrhagic ascites, respiratory and cardiac failure.

Ingestion:  Poison by ingestion and intraperitoneal routes.  May cause gastrointestinal irritation.

Skin:  May cause irritation and rashes.

Eye:  May cause irritation.

Chronic Effects:

Inhalation:  May cause fluorosis, pulmonary fibrosis, severe bone changes, hyperemia, cellular eosinophilia and vascular granulomata, acute chemical pneumonitis, subacute bronchitis and focal hypertrophic emphysema.

Ingestion:  May affect renal and hepatic functions, circulatory, enzyme and nervous system.

Skin:  May cause dermatitis and skin lesions.

Eye:  No chronic health effects recorded.

Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure:  Pre-existing respiratory, skin and gastrointestinal disorders.

Target Organs:  May affect the skeleton, kidneys, central nervous system, respiratory system and skin.

CarcinogenicityNTP:  No               IARC:  No             OSHA:  No

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION:  Remove victim to fresh air, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult and seek medical attention.

INGESTION: Give 1-2 glasses of milk or water, induce vomiting, seek medical attention.  Never induce vomiting or give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.

SKIN:  Remove contaminated clothing, brush material off of skin, wash affected area with mild soap and water.  Seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

EYES:  Flush with lukewarm water, lifting upper and lower eyelids, for at least 15 minutes.  Seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

VI.  REACTIVITY DATA

Stability:  Stable

Conditions to Avoid:  None

Incompatibility (Material to Avoid):  Acids and bases.

Hazardous Decomposition Products:  Fumes of fluorine and  barium.

Hazardous Polymerization:  Will not occur

VII.  SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES

Steps to be Taken in Case Material is Released or Spilled:  Wear appropriate respiratory and protective equipment specified in Section VIII.  Isolate spill area and provide ventilation.  Vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA) air filter and place in a closed container for proper disposal.  Take care not to raise dust.

Waste Disposal Method:  In accordance with Local, State and Federal Waste Disposal Regulations.

VIII.  SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection (Specify Type):  NIOSH-approved dust, mist, vapor respirator.

Ventilation:  Use local exhaust to maintain concentration at or below PEL, TLV.  Mechanical exhaust is recommended.

Protective Gloves:  Butyl gloves.

Eye Protection:  Safety goggles

Other Protective Equipment:  Protective gear suitable to prevent contamination.

IX.  SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage:  Store in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area.  Wash thoroughly after handling.

Work Practices:  Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure at low levels.  Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices.  Do not use tobacco or food in work area.  Wash thoroughly before eating and smoking.  Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air.
