Product Name: Strontium Formula: Sr CAS Number: 7440-24-6
II. HAZARDOUS INGREDIENTS Hazardous Component: Strontium Percent (%): 0-100 OSHA/PEL: N/E ACGIH/TLV: N/E HMIS Ratings: Health: 2 Flammability: 2 Reactivity: 2
III. PHYSICAL DATA Boiling Point: 1384 oC Melting Point: 769 oC Specific Gravity: 2.6 g/cc
Vapor Pressure: 13.3 hPa @ 898 Solubility in H2O: Reacts violently
Appearance and Odor: Silver white to pale yellow solid, no odor.
IV. FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS DATA Flash Point: N/A Autoignition Temperature: N/E or N/A Explosive Limits: Lower: N/A Upper: N/A Extinguishing Media: Flammable solid. If involved in fire, DO NOT USE WATER, C02, OR HALOGENATED EXTINGUISHING AGENTS. Use dry powder extinguishing agents, dry sand or dry dolomite. Special Firefighting Procedures: Use normal procedures which include wearing NIOSH/MSHA approved self-contained breathing apparatus, flame and chemical resistant clothing; hats, boots and gloves. If without risk, remove material from fire area. Cool container with water from maximum distance. Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards: Contact with water releases hydrogen (explosive).
V. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION Effects of Exposure: To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of strontium have not been thoroughly investigated and reported. Strontium has a low order of toxicity. As with calcium, the toxicity is generally a function of the anion. Acute exposure may cause excessive salivation, vomiting, colic, diarrhea, and respiratory failure in extreme cases. Acute Effects: Inhalation: Powder or dust may cause irritation. Ingestion: May cause vomiting, diarrhea and colic. Skin Contact: May cause irritation. Eye Contact: May cause irritation. Chronic Effects: Skin contact may cause dermatitis. No other chronic effects are known. Carcinogenicity: NTP: No IARC: No OSHA: No
EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES: INHALATION: Supply fresh air. If required, provide artificial respiration. Keep patient warm. Seek immediate medical advice. INGESTION: Seek immediate medical attention. SKIN: Immediately wash with water and soap and rinse thoroughly. Seek immediate medical advice. EYE: Immediately flush eyes, including under eyelids with copious amounts of water for at least 15 minutes. Then consult a doctor.
VI. REACTIVITY DATA Stability: Stable Conditions to Avoid: Reacts with sources of moisture increasing rapidly with reduced particle size or higher temperature. Incompatibility: Water/moisture, oxidizing agents, acids, O2 (air), halogens, interhalogens. Hazardous Decomposition Products: Hydrogen, metal oxide fume. Hazardous Polymerization: Will not occur Other: Oxidizes in air. Evolves hydrogen gas from water. Finely divided metal ignites spontaneously in air.
VII. SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES Steps to be Taken in Case Material is Released or Spilled: Wear full protective equipment, ensure adequate ventilation, keep away from ignition sources. Cover spill with dry sand or vermiculite. Mix well and carefully transfer to a container. Do not flush with water or aqueous cleansing agents. Waste Disposal Method: Consult state, local or federal EPA regulations for proper disposal.
VIII. SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION Respiratory Protection: CSA TC-21C half mask face piece for particulate removal or as required where dust may result from operations. Ventilation: Glove bag or box with a dry inert atmosphere preferred. Protective Gloves: Protect from snags. Only gloves which do not lead to dust build up should be used. Eye Protection: ANSI approved safety goggles. Other Protective Equipment: Protective work clothing.
IX. SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage: Store under kerosene or mineral oil or dry, inert gas to prevent oxidation. Keep container tightly sealed. Store in cool, dry place in tightly closed containers. Wash thoroughly after handling. Other Precautions: Store away from water/moisture. Store away from air. Do not store together with oxidizing and acidic materials. Store away from halogens. Protect from humidity and water. Keep ignition sources away. Work Practices: Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure. Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices. Do not use tobacco or food in work area. Wash thoroughly before eating or smoking. do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air. Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and hygienic facilities for washing. RCRA Code: D001 TSCA Registered: Yes Hazard Classification: Flammable solid. * Danger: Flammable, irritates skin and eyes. DOT Regulations: Hazard Class: 4.3 Identification Number: UN2813 Packing Group: II Proper Shipping Name: Water reactive solid, n.o.s. (strontium)
