Effects of Exposure:

To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of iridium have not been thoroughly investigated and recorded.

Pure iridium is clinically inert.  There are not reports of acute or chronic health effects to workers handling iridium and its compounds.  (Sax, Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials)

Acute Effects:

Inhalation: May cause irritation.

Ingestion:  No acute health effects recorded.

Skin:  May cause abrasive irritation.

Eye:  May cause abrasive irritation.

Chronic Effects:  No chronic health effects recorded.

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION:  Remove to fresh air, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult and seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

INGESTION:  Procedures normally not needed.  If large quantities are ingested, seed medical advice.

SKIN:  Flush with plenty of water.  Seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

EYES:  Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes.  Seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

VII.  SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES

Steps to Be Taken in Case Material Is Released or Spilled (Powder):  Wear appropriate respiratory and protective equipment specified in section VIII.  Isolate spill area, provide ventilation and extinguish sources of ignition.  Scoop up or vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA) air filter and place in a closed container for proper disposal.  Take care not to raise dust.  Use non-sparking tools.

Waste Disposal Method:  In accordance with Local, State and Federal Waste Disposal Regulations.  Has reclaim value as scrap.

VIII.  SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection:  For dusting conditions use a NIOSH approved dust respirator.

Ventilation:  Use local exhaust to maintain concentration of exposure at low levels.  General exhaust is recommended.

Protective Gloves:  Rubber gloves

Eye Protection:  Safety glasses

Other Protective Clothing or Equipment:  Protective gear suitable to prevent contamination.

IX.  SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage:  Store in a tightly sealed container away from heat, sparks and flame.  Store in a cool, dry location away from incompatible materials.  Avoid breathing dust, mist or fumes resulting form the use of this product.  Avoid and control operations which create dusting.  Avoid inhalation of metal powder fume and vapor.  Storage involves no hazard.

Work Practices:  Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure at low levels.  Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices.  Do not use tobacco or food in work area.  Wash thoroughly before eating and smoking.  Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air.  Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and facilities for washing.
